It's Not How You Start: A Journey of Faith and Determination

Greetings, dear readers! Today, I want to share a powerful story of faith, determination, and the incredible journey of a man named Edwin C. Barnes. This narrative is not just a testament to human perseverance but also a reflection of the divine principles that guide us through life's challenges.

The Story of Edwin C. Barnes

Edwin C. Barnes is a name that might not ring a bell for many, but his story is a cornerstone of Napoleon Hill's classic book, "Think and Grow Rich." Barnes discovered a profound truth that many men come to realize: that with deep desire and determination, one can truly think and grow rich—not just in material wealth but in spirit and purpose.

Barnes' journey began with a burning desire to become a business associate of the great inventor Thomas Edison. It was not a fleeting wish but a deep-seated goal that he was determined to achieve. The initial hurdles were significant: he did not know Edison, and he did not have enough money to travel from Wisconsin to Orange, New Jersey. These obstacles were enough to deter most people, but Barnes was no ordinary man. His desire was so intense that he decided to travel by freight train to New Jersey.

Upon arriving at Edison’s laboratory, Barnes boldly announced that he had come to go into business with Edison. Years later, Edison would recall this first meeting and the determined look on Barnes' face. He saw in Barnes an unwavering resolve, a trait that Edison had learned through experience was a precursor to success. Edison gave Barnes the opportunity he sought because he recognized that Barnes was willing to stake his entire future on a single chance.

The Power of Determination

Barnes started his journey working as an employee, not a partner. However, his dedication and belief in his dream never wavered. Over time, Edison noticed Barnes’ exceptional ability to interact with the equipment, experiments, and employees. Barnes' big break came when Edison had an invention to sell that no one else believed in. Barnes took up the challenge, proving his mettle by successfully selling what came to be known as the Edison Dictating Machine. This success led Edison to make Barnes a partner.

This story highlights a crucial lesson: it doesn’t matter where you start or the challenges you face. What matters is the vision you have for your life and the determination to see it through. Barnes' journey from a penniless dreamer to a successful business associate of Edison is a testament to the power of persistence and faith.

Lessons from Barnes’ Journey

For each of us, the message is clear. No matter where you are right now, what your background is, or the obstacles you face, it is not how you start but how you finish that counts. The only one who can stop you from achieving your goals is yourself. God is always with you, and with His guidance, you can overcome any hurdle.

Philippians 4:13 reminds us, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." This scripture underscores the belief that with God's strength, we can achieve our dreams and overcome our challenges.

The Parable of the Chinese Bamboo Tree

Another story that beautifully illustrates this principle is the parable of the Chinese bamboo tree. When you plant a bamboo tree seed, it takes five years of watering and nurturing before it breaks through the ground. However, once it does, it grows 90 feet tall in just five months. The question is, did the bamboo tree grow 90 feet in five months or five years? The answer is clear: it took all five years of care and patience for that growth to occur.

Similarly, our efforts and perseverance might not show immediate results, but continuous faith and hard work will eventually lead to success. Galatians 6:9 says, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Biblical Examples of Perseverance

The Bible is filled with stories of perseverance and faith. The thieves crucified with Jesus are a poignant example. In Luke 23:39-43, one of the thieves mocked Jesus, while the other recognized His innocence and asked to be remembered in His kingdom. Jesus replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." Despite their past, it was their recognition and faith at the end that determined their eternal fate.

This story emphasizes that it is not how you start but how you finish that matters. Our journey with God is marked by our faith and perseverance, not by our past mistakes.

Conclusion: Finishing Strong

As we navigate our lives, let us remember that our starting point does not define us. What truly matters is our determination to finish strong, guided by faith and the principles of God's kingdom. We might face challenges, but with God's help, we can overcome them and achieve our goals.

Isaiah 40:31 encourages us with these words: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Let us hold onto our dreams, work diligently towards them, and trust in God's timing and plan for our lives. It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish that counts.

Thank you for joining me in this reflection. May God bless you and guide you in all your endeavors.
