The season of Christmas is often accompanied by lights, music, gifts, and gatherings. But beyond the festivities and traditions lies a deeper question: Why do we need Christmas? What is the true purpose of this season, and what does it mean for us today?
The Promise of Hope
Christmas reminds us that humanity’s greatest need was met through God’s ultimate gift: Jesus Christ. In Isaiah 9:6, the prophet declares, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” This verse points to the hope God offered a broken world through His Son.
We need Christmas because it is a declaration that hope has come. The birth of Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise to redeem and restore His people. It’s a reminder that no matter how dark life seems, the light of Christ shines brighter.
A Need for Redemption
The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23 that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Our separation from God because of sin created an insurmountable gap. We couldn’t fix it ourselves; we needed a Savior.
Christmas celebrates that God didn’t leave us in our brokenness. John 3:16 captures this beautifully: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus’ birth is the beginning of God’s plan to rescue us from sin and reconcile us to Himself.
God’s Presence Among Us
Christmas reminds us that God isn’t distant; He is Emmanuel, “God with us.” In Matthew 1:23, it’s written, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel.” This means God stepped into our world, experiencing life as we do. He knows our struggles, joys, and sorrows.
Through Jesus, we see God’s heart for humanity. He didn’t send someone else to save us; He came Himself. That’s the depth of His love for us.
A Call to Share the Good News
Christmas isn’t just about what God has done for us—it’s also a call to action. When the shepherds heard the angels proclaim the birth of Jesus, they couldn’t keep the news to themselves. Luke 2:17 says, “When they had seen Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.”
We’re called to do the same. The gift of Jesus is too wonderful to keep to ourselves. Christmas is an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love in our words and actions, to bring His light into the lives of others.
The Gift of Peace and Joy
Life is often filled with chaos, worry, and pain. But through Jesus, we receive peace that transcends circumstances. In John 14:27, Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Christmas reminds us that true peace and joy are found in Christ alone. It’s not about the presents under the tree but the presence of Jesus in our lives.
Why We Celebrate
So why do we need Christmas? Because it’s more than a holiday. It’s a celebration of God’s love, hope, and redemption. It’s a reminder of His faithfulness and the incredible lengths He went to bring us back to Him.
This Christmas, let’s take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the season. Let’s thank God for the gift of His Son and share that gift with those around us. And let’s remember that Christmas is not just a day but a declaration of the greatest truth: God so loved the world that He gave.
